“We are seeing strong demand for antiviral small molecules in APAC”

While vaccines have been rapidly developed and rolled out, there remains a dearth of small molecule treatment options that are designed specifically to combat COVID-19.

These treatments are critical for those who are unresponsive to vaccines, cannot be vaccinated, or are unable to access vaccines. It has recently discovered several small molecules that have shown to be effective against SARS-CoV-2 and other coronavirus strains. Recently, the global firm MSD, a trade name of Merck & Co., Inc., has contributed to the small molecule regimen to counter COVID-19 for those patients, for whom alternative COVID-19 treatment options are not accessible or clinically appropriate. Aileen Dualan, Head of Global Medical Affairs (Asia Pacific), MSD shared further insights on the company’s efforts in introducing small-molecule antiviral treatment to tackle the novel coronavirus. How effective are oral small-molecule antiviral products against SARS-CoV-2?

More than two years on from the first case, it is clear that the response to COVID-19 is complex and challenging. We believe a range of medicines and vaccines is needed to make an impact on the pandemic, including a need for multiple therapies due to a variety of patient, pathogen and environmental factors.
