British Sailing Team 49er crew FYNN STERRITT explains how to perfect your hoisting technique and what to watch out for at the windward mark

- Fynn Sterritt

Faster Hoists

There are several elements that are crucial to get right when hoisting your spinnaker, and generally they all come into play at some stage, no matter what class you are sailing. When sailing a high performance boat like a 49er they just happen a bit faster! Establishing a good relationship and clear communication with your crew are fundamental to everything running smoothly on the water. After that it is best to break things down into component parts to ensure you can make the most of every hoist.

Being aware of the boats around you as you approach the mark and trying to anticipate what they are likely to do will in turn help you to anticipate any boat-on-boat situations before they develop. Feed this knowledge into your plan, being ready to adapt: for example, it may be that you need to come out of the hoist higher than you would like.
