Scooter on Steroids

India has seen a great variety of two wheeler launches ever since the current motorcycle ‘revolution’ that began over half a decade ago. The motorcycle fraternity has a huge variety of mad machines to buy as long as they have enough money to buy one. Yet, despite this ‘revolution’, there remains a huge gap that needs to be filled. Let’s take scooters for example. All the scooters that are available in India as of now belong to that can-do-all category and cater to one particular segment – be it the Activas or the Rodeos of this world. Only the Vespas with their unmatched retro styling and swag have been a breath of fresh air. And there exists an opportunity for things like maxi scooters and scooters that have different personalities and do not intend to keep everyone happy.

Piaggio targeted that segment of the market when it showcased the Aprilia SR150 at Auto Expo earlier this year. It looked unlike any other scooter that was being sold in India. It therefore managed to raise a tremendous amount of curiosity and interest among potential scooter buyers.

Aprilia finally launched the SR150 some time back at a price point of 65,000 ex-showroom Delhi and we’d definitely count this as one of best things to happen to the Indian two wheeler Industry this year. We were invited by Aprilia to see the first ever production SR150 coming out of the assembly line and also to test ride it. And here’s what we could make of that small rendezvous.
