THE LEGACIES OF HENRY FORD, ENZO Ferrari and Ferdinand Porsche live on through the car companies that continue to carry their family names. Ferdinand Piëch, who passed away in August at the age of 82 following a short illness, never started his own car company, never drove through factory gates with his name above them. But he did build one of the biggest and most successful automotive groups in the world from the ashes of a failing car company – a company that was reportedly only three weeks from closing its doors for good when the Austrian presented an ultimatum to the then VW board: do it my way, or we will all be looking for new jobs.
