This 1956 Chevy stepside , when first sighted, was like one of those stray puppies you always see on SPCA ads. You know the ones, they are all big eyes and hanging ears and that forlorn look that says “Take me home please, I’ll be a good dog, I promise!”. Jacques Mouton just couldn’t say no when good buddy Ian Marais showed him some pics of this truck lying in the veld outside Sutherland two years ago, and the truck was duly acquired.
Of course, like all strays, this one hid it’s abuse well. The chassis had been cut off in front of the firewall and the back part, along with the bin, was made into a trailer. It was worked to death on the farm until the one wheel bearing collapsed. Undeterred, the farmer just smeared it grease and worked it harder. Eventually the sideshaft wore through the diff casing and the tire rubbed on the inner wheel well. Only then was it parked. In addition, there was no driver’s door, no lights, seat or glass.
