Farrington dared and won

Also in 2017, in Windsor’s inaugural five-star grand prix, we witnessed what showjumping editor Jennifer Donald still describes as “one of the best jump-offs I’ve ever seen”
CSI5* Royal Windsor, Berkshire
“WHO dares wins,” said Billy Twomey during a pre-jump-off course-walk for the Rolex grand prix at the first five-star international show held at Royal Windsor.
The Irishman could not have spoken truer words, as 12 of the world’s best were about to chase a €75,000 (£63,500) first prize over a brilliant track set by senior designer Bob Ellis. The course had everything: tempting turns, long runs and a gallop to an almighty vertical standing over 1.65m.
There was neither a seat nor standing space to be had from start to finish of the class, and with three Brits among the dozen who were clear, there was plenty to cheer about.
Second-drawn Guy Williams set a superb standard on his ride of only a fortnight, Rouge De Ravel. This 12-year-old French-bred stallion has enormous scope and looks a candidate for future British teams.
“I jumped him in the two-star grand prix at Lummen and then brought him straight here. I’m still getting to know him and this was a big step up,” said Guy, who ended up sixth.
