What Are Some Exercises For Quieter And Kinder Hands?
HQ magazine
|January 2018
Many of us are naturally talented riders and we need to do a bit of extra work to ensure we make correct use of our seat, hands and legs. Novice and amateur riders have a large tendency to grab and clutch the reins for control, and we all lack stability in our hands as beginners. These exercises address some of the common mistakes we make with our hands.

Stiff arms
Many riders naturally want to control everything using the reins, but we are constantly told that most of our riding comes from our legs and seat. The problem with stiff hands is that you can’t establish a consistent contact, as you end up pulling your horse in the mouth when his head nods forward and then creating loops in the reins as it comes back.
