Mandy Colbourne’s life has been dominated by animals, from the exotic - iguana, gecko, python and lizards - to family pets, and then by her first pony. She now lives on a smallholding between Carmarthen and Cardigan, close to the Pembrokeshire border, with a wide variety of livestock.
“We are very much a working smallholding, and it’s a tough but very rewarding way of life,” said Mandy. “We have 13 acres and use every square inch one way or another. We keep rare breed and longwool sheep (Gotlands, Leicester Longwool, Wensleydale, Bluefaced Leicester, Corriedale, Dorset Down and Teeswater), Berkshire pigs, Anglo Nubian milking goats, hens and ducks for eggs, and each year we rear a few turkeys as well as meat chickens. Our freezers are a joy to behold. My husband Derek and I have an agreement: I rear it, he cooks it.
