This issue, we take a look at ball-jointed dolls (BJDs) and BJD artists — but what does that mean, exactly? Ball jointing has been used on dolls for well over a century, and probably on the majority of dolls manufactured today. When you hear people talking about BJDs nowadays, they’re mainly referring to a particular type of doll, one that was designed with the idea that its owner could easily customize it to their liking — not just giving it a change of clothes, but swapping out the eyes, changing the wig, and more! Many BJDs are available unpainted, or with just a very basic face paint, so that the collectors can do it themselves. In short, making it as easy as possible for a doll collector to get
involved in the creative process to whatever extent they choose.
