In dieser Ausgabe

The transportation sector is a major user of wireless communication technology, both for voice and increasingly for data transmissions too. In the railway industry the GSM-R standard predominates in Europe, but TETRA is one alternative now being used, while LTE will is being lined up as a future standard. In this issue we also look at in-tunnel coverage for rail and metro.

We profile the wide range of wireless systems in use at the challenging RF environment of Heathrow Airport and examine the now rapid roll out of Wi-Fi for in-flight communications on board aircraft. Ports play a vital role in national critical infrastructure, particularly in the UK. We look at the role wireless plays in automating port operations to them more efficient and secure and examine the range of wireless deployments at operator ABP’s 21 UK ports.

Wireless systems are also being installed in roads and vehicles to monitor and control traffic, measure pollution and improve accident response, while haulage fleet telematics represent one of the most advanced uses of M2M technology to date. Finally, we take a look at the difficulties facing the UK authorities in upgrading 112/999 contacts to handle new media such as text, messaging, photos, social media and video.
