The October issue of 4x4 contains the answer to the biggest question of the year: What’s the new Defender like? Like us, you’ve probably read all sorts of stuff elsewhere already. Some of the comments we’ve seen on social media have been ridiculous – and so have some of the reviews published by media outlets that really should know better. We’ve tried to concentrate on the facts. Not the hype, not the spurious claims – and not the endless comparisons between the new Defender and the old one. We knew it was going to be different: so instead, we used our first ever experience of the vehicle to discovery what it’s like. And it was a journey of discovery in more ways than one… If old Defenders are more your thing, we’ve got a travel story about a couple who took on one of the world’s harshest places aboard a Tdi-engined 110. Death Valley might be a national park – but out there in the back of beyond, it’s a land of desolation, extreme weather and bugs that want to kill you. East Leicestershire isn’t quite as unwelcoming as Death Valley – in fact, it’s one of the lushest parts of Britain. A fine location for this month’s Roadbook, which features some spectacular lanes we’ve never used before. At the other end of the old Defender scale, we’re profiling a just-so restoration on a 90 that’s been transformed from a 2.5 nat-asp diesel to a purring V8 with a lounge-like interior. There’s no shortage of star cars in this issue of 4x4, in fact. Including a glorious 80-Series Toyota Landcruiser built for high-end overlanding and – the best of the lot, many people would say – a Suzuki SJ that’s been resto-modded in an unstoppable off-road toy that’s also an ultra-clean show car.
