Scientists say we know less about what lies in our oceans and seas than we do about outer space. And although space is less accessible to us, the ocean waters hold great, untold mysteries that many of us water-lovers will never really learn. To reconcile the vast enigma of underwater worlds with our limited human capability to explore them, cultures have created their own imaginings of seafarers and mermaids, sirens and water fairies. Now with the kind of photographic technology available, scuba-diving photographers can share with us but glimpses of that world through their creative visions. To further attain a grasp of the fleeting nature of water, photographers set their own scenes and stages underwater in an attempt to interpret their vision of the world in an other-worldly setting, thus bringing some of water’s fluid mysteries to our unambiguous life on land.
