FROM THE HIMALAYAS TO THE UNITED NATIONS: HOW YOGA BECAME INDIA GREATEST GLOBAL GIFT
The Business Guardian
|June 22, 2026
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi stood before the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014 and proposed an International Yoga Day, he was not merely advocating a physical exercise.
-
He was presenting to the world one of India’s oldest traditions—an ancient philosophy rooted in harmony between mind, body and nature. Within just 75 days, the proposal transformed into one of the most widely supported resolutions in the history of the United Nations. More than a decade later, International Yoga Day is celebrated in almost every corner of the globe, making yoga one of India’s most successful instruments of cultural diplomacy and soft power.
A CIVILIZATION'S GIFT
India’s civilisational legacy has enriched humanity in numerous ways—from the invention of zero and pioneering contributions in astronomy and surgery to profound philosophical traditions. At the heart of this heritage lies the concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family.
Yoga embodies this philosophy. Derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “to unite”, yoga seeks harmony between body, mind and spirit. Far more than physical postures, it is a holistic way of life that promotes discipline, mindfulness and inner balance.
References to yoga can be traced to the Vedas, among the oldest sacred texts of humanity. Later, Maharishi Patanjali codified yogic wisdom in the Yoga Sutras, outlining the eight limbs of yoga that continue to guide practitioners around the world.
Over centuries, Indian sages and spiritual teachers preserved and expanded these traditions. During the twentieth century, figures such as Swami Vivekananda, Paramahansa Yogananda, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya and B.K.S. Iyengar introduced yoga to Western audiences, laying the foundation for its worldwide popularity.
THE PROPOSAL THAT CHANGED HISTORY
Addressing the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described yoga as “an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition.”
