6 quick, budget-friendly winter meals for the KZN Sardine Run
Sunday Tribune
|June 28, 2026
FOR Durbanites, the winter run simply reignites a deep, year-round love affair with this humble silver fish.
When the fresh gluts vanish from the beaches, KwaZulu-Natal home cooks turn to the ultimate pantry hero: the humble tin of sardines.
It is affordable, unapologetically filling, and a nostalgic cornerstone of South African comfort food. Whether plucked fresh from a net on Scottburgh beach or cracked open from a tin on a rainy Tuesday night, these are the quick, fire-and-spice dishes that define our coastal winter comfort.
Sardine jaffles
Forget fancy paninis. The ultimate sardine experience is born over open coals in a heavy, cast-iron jaffle iron.
Butter your bread generously right to the edges, then pack it with flaked sardines, a thick slice of tomato, sharp cheddar, and a heavy hand of black pepper.
Toast it over the braai until the bread is charred and crispy, and the cheese melts into a gooey, smoky river that holds the fish together. It’s hot, messy, and tastes exactly like winter vacation.
The fiery sardine vetkoek
There is a sacred alchemy when hot, fried dough meets sharp spice. Take a warm, golden vetkoek crisp on the outside, steamy and pillowy on the inside and tear it open.
Stuff it immediately with a quick, punchy mixture of sardines mashed with finely chopped red onion, fresh coriander, a severe squeeze of lemon juice, and a finely chopped bird’s-eye chilli.
