'WE'RE POOR RELATION OF CITY CENTRE'
Liverpool Sunday Echo
|August 10, 2025
A BOLD new vision has been put forward for a part of Liverpool city centre that has been described as “forgotten” and “disconnected”.
Earlier this year, Liverpool City Council announced the first stage of a “transformational” masterplan for the city's cultural quarter - encompassing a 35-hectare area including Lime Street, William Brown Street and the surrounding areas.
The local authority said the removal of the Churchill Way Flyovers, which used to dominate the city gateway, has created “one of Liverpool's most significant regeneration opportunities” that carries “huge investment potential” in the areas where the brutalist structures once stood.
A team of “place-making experts” has been appointed to set out how the crucial gateway to the city centre can be regenerated.
Those living and working in the area at the end of Dale Street and around the Old Haymarket area close to the entrance of the Queensway Tunnel have cautiously welcomed the move, believing that something big needs to happen in the “forgotten part of town”.
