Liam McArthur's assisted dying bill passed stage 1 in the Scottish Parliament by 70 votes to 56.

Assisted dying bill gives public freedom of choice

I supported the bill because it basically gives freedom of choice to an individual over their own body and their own life rather than the state denying them such an important freedom.

It applies only to people with a terminal diagnosis and must be independently verified by two GPs.

Mr McArthur is committed to taking forward many of the issues raised over the next two stages to see if he can help alleviate many of the concerns expressed.

He responded to many of those concerns during the debate and assured members that that there is no evidence that they have occurred in other countries where assisted dying is permitted.
