Truly effective leaders will stand beside you, not above you

MOST people think leadership is about influence, authority, or the ability to make difficult decisions. While those qualities matter, they do not define great leadership. The best leaders share a different trait: they see leadership as service rather than status.

Too often, leadership positions are viewed as rewards. They come with prestige, recognition and authority. This can lead people to compete for titles, envy those in higher positions, or measure their success by how much power they hold. But truly effective leaders think differently. They do not ask, “What does this position do for me?" They ask, “What does this position require from me?" Their focus is not on personal gain but on the needs of the people they serve.
