High jewellery in horology has historically been deployed as a softening agent—a decorative layer designed to signal femininity rather than structural intent.

With the unveiling of the spectacular RM HJ-02 In-House Automatic Tourbillon, Richard Mille completely upends this conventional paradigm. Marking the second chapter in the brand's high jewellery saga, this limited edition of 12 unique pieces reverses that logic entirely, treating technical gem-setting not as an afterthought, but as a fundamental, architectural principle of watch construction.

Conceived as an immersive study in individuality, the RM HJ-02 celebrates 20 years of design for women through a dreamlike, dazzling language that demands over 700 hours of craftsmanship per watch—the equivalent of 88 full working days. Comprising four distinct chromatic universes—Blue Ballet, Green Gambit, Violet Variations, and Pink Pursuit—the collection deconstructs the maison’s iconic tonneau shape through an uncompromising approach to form, light, and material resistance.

A KALEIDOSCOPE OF MICRO-LAPIDARY MASTERY

To gaze upon the dial of an RM HJ-02 is to witness a controlled interplay of light reflection and absorption. Rather than adhering to predictable gradients, each of the 12 unique models acts as a constructed patchwork of colour, where 1,399 precisely sourced precious and ornamental stones define the very contours of the watch.

The gem-setting team pairs classical precious stones like sapphires, rubies, diamonds, emeralds, and rare Paraiba tourmalines with opaque, textured minerals. Natural elements such as malachite, chrysoprase, turquoise, and mother-of-pearl are meticulously milled directly from the source material and refined through abrasion to achieve a perfectly uniform thickness—an incredibly unstable and demanding process required to prevent stress and breakage.
