July 06, 2026

A BLOOD test that can detect colorectal cancer has been added to the American Cancer Society's list of recommended screenings for the disease.

NEW BLOOD TEST FOR CANCER DETECTION

The test, which is called Shield, works by detecting DNA fragments released by cancerous tumors into the blood. Shield is not meant to replace colonoscopies, which are considered the "gold standard" test for colorectal cancer screening.

The American Cancer Society recommends Shield only for people who can't or won't undergo more effective screenings like colonoscopies or stool tests. Some face insurance problems or other financial barriers, are embarrassed or don't have the time.
