For institutions built around preparing people to lead, manage, and make decisions, the challenge goes far beyond adding a few AI tools to the curriculum. It requires a closer look at what business education is actually for.

THE FUTURE OF B-SCHOOLS IN AN AI-SHAPED ECONOMY

AI can draft reports, analyze data, produce marketing plans, summarize complex material, generate strategy options, and assist with financial modeling. Many of these tasks once formed the training ground for managers early in their careers.

The problem is that machines can now perform much of that work. As a result, business schools are now asking what special value their graduates are meant to bring to workplaces. That question points to five key shifts they can no longer afford to avoid.

The first shift is about literacy. AI literacy must become as fundamental to business education as financial literacy.

In the past, business graduates were expected to understand balance sheets, marketing plans, strategy frameworks, and organizational behavior. Those foundations still matter, but they are no longer enough.

In an AI-driven economy, graduates must also understand prompts, data systems, automation, bias, model limitations, and the ethical use of machine-generated advice.

The fact that business schools are already integrating generative AI across teaching, learning, research, and operations shows this is not a side issue or a passing technical trend. AI is becoming part of the operating system of business education itself.
