The Essex skipper scored his second century of the summer as the cheerful chappies from Chelmsford regained top-spot following their innings success at home over Surrey and Somerset’s untimely defeat by Hampshire.

“It’s a very rewarding feeling to beat Surrey, they were the only team this season that we hadn’t beaten in the Championship,” ten Doeschate said ahead of this week’s winner-takes-all title decider with Somerset at Taunton.

“My hundred was long overdue and the partnership with Dan Lawrence [of 173] helped set up a good lead and let ‘Harmy’ (Simon Harmer) capitalise in their second innings.
