Breathing Space

Home to intimate niches and uncluttered spaces, Dr Sonia Bhalla’s three-bedroom apartment is an oasis of calm in the otherwise chaotic city of Gurgaon. As someone who puts in a great deal of thought before adding anything new to the home she shares with her husband and son, Sonia follows ‘an extra inch of space wherever possible’ rule of thumb with sincerity. But it wasn’t always so. “The look and feel of the home was completely different when we moved here in 2003,” she says. “At that time, my husband’s parents and grandparents were also living with us.” And so, each room was done up according to the needs of the family members. All that, however, changed recently. “After my in-laws moved into a neighbouring apartment and my son went abroad for further studies, we decided to make some alterations in the house.”
