Priyanjali Datta has vowed to make India cancer-free, and has started by visiting villages and examining women for breast cancer. She talks to Nikshubha Garg about the cause that’s close to her heart

Dr Priyanjali Datta’s vision is clear— in the coming years, she wants Aaroogya to be the pioneer organisation dealing with preventive healthcare and early detection. The 25-year-old kick-started the non-profit social innovation venture in 2015 in her hometown, Meghalaya, after her mom’s pre-cancer diagnosis left her shattered. “She was diagnosed with essential thrombocytosis (an uncommon disorder in which the body produces too many blood platelets), and it was then that I understood how important it is for people to be aware about their health. I was determined to make a difference.” Upon extensive research, Datta found that the primary healthcare facilities were lacking in the basics. Until now, Aaroogya has spread its wings in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Bihar.
