Managing a team is like going white water rafting—it’s crazy, unpredictable and fun, as long as you have a life vest. Anindita Ghosh has advise to keep you afloat.
So you finally got that promotion you had your eyes on. Congratulations on being crowned team manager but, at the risk of sounding like party poopers, we have to mention a note of caution. According to statistics from a study conducted by the Corporate Executive Board, a global best practice insights and technology company, 60 per cent of team managers fail in their first two years due to a variety of factors. After all, a position of responsibility that requires you to win the trust and respect of your juniors as well as satisfy your seniors is not an easy one to keep. According to Amber Tennant, VP of People, Coursera, an educational technology company, “Managers have the opportunity to shape their team’s contributions to the organisation as well as foster each member’s professional and personal growth. New managers should approach their work with humility, invest time in getting to know each of their group member’s motivations and growth areas, and work with their team to develop a compelling vision. Seek opportunities to celebrate team wins and don’t shy away from coaching someone who can do better. Make a habit of continually reflecting on and improving your skills.”
That’s quite a tall order, but you can start with being the best team manager ever by keeping these key points in mind.
