Saying “yes” to extra work even when you’re drowning in deadlines isn’t a good idea, but how can you turn down your boss?
When to say it
When you enter the workforce, it’s natural to want to prove your worth and say “yes” every time your boss asks if you can take on a new project. But if you keep this up, you’ll most likely end up overstretched and miserable. “I said yes to everything at the start of my employment as I wanted to prove I could handle it,” says Christine, a marketing executive. “I was thankful for the opportunities that came my way and the autonomy I received from my bosses, but constantly saying ‘yes’ made it harder for me to say no. I got so busy that I was replying to e-mails in the shower.”
On the flipside, if you turn down every request, you might get a reputation for avoiding work. It’s a tough line to navigate, but to help you decide, ask yourself the following questions:
Does the request…
1 Take time away from your main responsibilities at work?
2 Seem like it’s only being dumped on you because someone else didn’t want to do it?
3 Help you advance a goal?
