New Toyota Prius: Appeals To Both The Heart And Mind

The all-new, fourthgeneration hybrid Prius sedan was recently the cynosure of all eyes at the Toyota Caravan, a campaign to promote safety and eco-friendly technologies, in Delhi.

The new Prius has been already launched in the US and the UK and draws on its strength of being the first hybrid model and a popular Toyota product. Till date, Prius hybrids have sold 3,878,000 units worldwide with the carmaker’s cumulative hybrid portfolio adding upto nine million units. Of this, the latest Prius has contributed 291,000 units since its rollout a year ago. Toyota currently has 33 hybrid cars and one plug-in hybrid model which are sold across 90 international markets.

When its Indian subsidiary Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) introduced the Camry hybrid in 2013, the car became the first made-in-India hybrid model to come out of the Bidadi plant at Bangalore. In fact, in India, the Camry hybrid has fared better than its petrol engined sibling which accounts for only 10 percent of the sales. The Camry has sold about 1,100 units since its launch and is expected to clock 1,300 units by endCY2016.

Toyota has been focusing on plug-in and strong hybrid models that it claims deliver higher fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions compared to regular fossil fuel-powered cars. The Prius, the world’s largest selling hybrid, delivers fuel economy of 23.91kpl while the locally assembled Toyota Camry hybrid gives 19.16km to a litre, matching if not bettering the fuel economies of many rival conventionally fueled cars in its segment.
