Just What The Doc Ordered!

Irish eyes are smiling as MattDoherty begins his Spurs career at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon.

Signed from Wolves at the end of last month, the all-action right-back has had a whirlwind spell since the end of last season, completing his move here to north London just 19 days after his swansong in old gold as Wanderers lost narrowly to Sevilla in the delayed UEFA Europa League quarter-finals before heading off on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

Returning earlier this week after a frustrating 1-1 draw with Bulgaria and 1-0 defeat to Finland in the UEFA Nations League, he’s now fully focussed on the start of our 2020/21 campaign. Ahead of this afternoon’s curtain-raiser against Everton, the 28-year-old has spoken of his pride, not only at the chance to represent Tottenham Hotspur, but also at being the latest in a long line of stars hailing from across the Irish Sea to wear our colours.

“Whenever you start something new you want to start well, don’t you?” he smiled, looking ahead to today’s 4.30pm kick-off against the Toffees. “You want to get off to a flying start and I can’t wait to get going. I’ve been away with Ireland and I’m obviously familiar with the Club’s Irish connections – because of Robbie Keane mainly! I actually saw Robbie a couple of weeks ago.
