‘Guys have showed their character'

Q: For Tremaine Edmunds’s career he’s only had 15 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and no fumble recovers. That’s a long way of asking, do you need bigger and more impact plays from a player who’s generally right in the middle of everything as part of your defense?

SM: Yes.

Q: How does he get that? Because it seems like this year he just seems to be a tentative player. I know he’s got the shoulder injury, but it just doesn’t seem like he’s reacting and diagnosing. Is that part of the problem?

SM: Well, I think it just starts with understanding and then clarity for him in being decisive more than anything. You’ve got to be decisive and at the end of the day you may not be perfect, but this is not a perfect game. There’s certain times when technique’s involved, there’s certain times when it’s recognition, and there’s other times when you’ve just got to blow things up. You create your own opportunities through playing through the system, through film study and getting more and more comfortable and so now it’s to take another step this week and the weeks ahead as we move forward as a team and he moves forward on impacting our defense and impacting the game.

Q: Part of the narrative has been that even before the shoulder injury he has struggled in the past at shedding blocks. Do you see that as one of the issues, maybe? He gets guys on him and he can’t get rid of them?

Dak Prescott, Cowboys 6-2 • 235 pounds • 27 years old A solid starter who has a nice TD-INT ratio over his first five seasons (104-40), Prescott is an accurate thrower and very mobile. However, he’s coming off a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle, so it remains to be seen if this will impact his game moving forward.

Hunter Henry, Chargers 6-5 • 250 pounds • 29 years old A very talented player, Henry has had issues staying healthy, unable to complete an NFL season, including missing the entire 2018 season with a torn ACL. But when healthy, he’s a terrific all-around tight end who really connected with Justin Herbert in 2020 with 60 catches. Henry is very good at finding holes in zone coverage.
