Cases have doubled in the past week and around 200 children are thought to have been affected.
Alexander’s mother Kathryn Rowlands, 29, said: “I can’t believe I carried him for longer than he was alive. I will never be whole again.” The first signs Alexander was ill included a pinprick sunburn-like rash, a high temperature and swollen lymph nodes.
He later developed severe sickness and the hands and soles of his feet turned red.
Derriford Hospital, Plymouth diagnosed Kawasaki disease, a rare inflammatory syndrome that usually affects children under five.
