Around 105,630 transactions took place last month – the highest for October since 2015 – according to official figures.
Across Britain, sales were up by 8.1 per cent year on year on the back of pent-up demand and a rush by would-be buyers to save as much as £15,000 during the stamp duty holiday.
Transactions were also nearly 9.8 per cent higher than in September 2020, data from HM Revenue and Customs showed.
Andrew Southern, chairman of property developer Southern Grove, said: “Covid-19 has blown the lid off the housing market. After years in the doldrums, coronavirus has unexpectedly provided the rude awakening the market needed to launch its great escape.
