Born in Guangzhou, but raised in Shanghai, Pei moved to America where he studied at MIT and then Harvard. As a boy, he drew inspiration to become an architect while wondering in the classical Chinese gardens of Suzhou, near Shanghai where he later created the lovely Suzhou Museum. I had been to Suzhou earlier to linger within its ancient gardens, learning as an old man what Pei learned as a boy! At one time Suzhou had more than 350 classic gardens.
