Gathering after church one Sunday in the spring of 2018, Jon Wright and some friends were reflecting on their pastor’s sermon about using their blessings to make a difference, and expressed a shared desire to find a way to make a positive impact in their Syracuse, New York, community. As they bounced around ideas, one member mentioned an episode of the Facebook show “Returning the Favor,” which spotlighted a man named Luke Mickelson, who founded Sleep in Heavenly Peace, an organization that builds and donates beds to kids in need.
It’s hard to imagine children not having a bed to sleep in, Jon thought, his heart clenching.
During the week, he and the rest of the group watched the show and also did some research. They were shocked to learn that, on average, an estimated 2% to 3% of kids in the U.S. are without beds, and many more are forced to share a bed with siblings, which can negatively impact their health and performance in school.
Discussing their findings, the group unanimously and enthusiastically decided, “Let’s build beds for families right here in Syracuse!”
