Cottage-style borders that pull in pollinators

The art of ATTRACTION

Nonstop nectar

Planting for pollinators is a surefire way to achieve a glorious garden. A mix of native and nonnative plants stitched into a rich tapestry of colour, shape and scent serves up a nutritious smorgasbord for bees, butterflies and other insects to dip into all year. Aim to provide food plants for caterpillars too (typically, nettles, hops and grasses), for the perfect pollinator haven.

Tempting tips

* Grow single flower varieties over doubles, as densely packed petals make nectar and pollen more difficult to reach.

* Lure night-flying moths with evening scent and pale flowers, such as evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) and tobacco plant (Nicotiana alata).
