Water birds need a boost when it's cold, but make sure you give them the right food

- STEVE CAIN

Helping our FEATHERED FRIENDS

At this time of year, ducks and other waterfowl need our help to supplement their natural food source, so why not plan a winter walk to take in a local lake, river or canal?

Ducks will normally feed on grass and insects, but these are more difficult to find when the ground is frozen, and plants and flowers have died back.

Try to avoid places where lots of other people gather to feed. This will prevent excess food clogging up the area and potentially damaging the environment. Remember not to overfeed - portion control is as important for them as it is for us!
