Fragrant roses and a royal garden

AUTUMN BEAUTY

Bury a handful of nerine bulbs (Nerine bowdenii) in the ground or in pots for floral fireworks from September to October. These flamboyant South African natives have lily-like flowers up to 8cm wide, but need summer heat to perform well.

Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot and in well-drained soil or compost. Look for cultivars such as rich pink ‘Isabel’ and sparkling white ‘Athena’ (both H50cm).
