In our rapidly evolving social landscape, the words we choose carry unprecedented weight. What once seemed like innocent, everyday expressions can now inadvertently cause offence or even legal complications. Recent incidents in educational settings highlights the critical need for awareness about language sensitivity and the importance of staying current with evolving communication norms.

The Changing Face Of Language

Language is a living entity that continuously evolves to reflect society's values and understanding. Terms that were once acceptable or even positive can acquire new connotations over time. The word “special,” traditionally used to express admiration or uniqueness, has in some contexts become associated with developmental or physical differences, leading to misunderstandings when used in educational settings.

Similarly, expressions like “Are you blind?” which were once considered mere figures of speech, are now recognised as potentially insensitive to individuals with visual impairments. The preferred terminology has shifted to more respectful alternatives like “visually impaired” or “non-sighted.”
