The new session has begun, and soon students will be settling into hostels in unfamiliar cities, away from their families and friends. For single female students, following the “Girl Code” in all situations remains an important guideline. These are mostly unwritten rules, and many believe that the Girl Code applies to all women, not just close friends. It is not a separate concept but an expression of common humanity.

According to Dr. Shobha, Professor in the Department of Women’s Studies at the university, the following are important aspects of the Girl Code:

Do Not Share Each Other's Boyfriend Secrets

Never date, flirt with, or have any romantic relationship with a friend's ex-boyfriend. It is completely forbidden and a huge breach of trust and respect. Trust is everything—if a friend confides in you about her personal life, sex life, or relationship, keep it confidential. Do not share personal details about her boyfriend with others, especially without her permission. Flirting or getting too close to a friend's partner is a clear violation of the Girl Code. Avoid spending inappropriate time alone with your friend's boyfriend.

Always Share Tampons With Your Girlfriends

Even if you've had a fallout with a friend, tampons (or sanitary pads) should be shared when needed—even with strangers, if necessary. Every woman may need one at some point. If she’s unprepared, help your sister out.
