The stories of Jews in America—especially Jewish women—are often overlooked, but many have had an extraordinary impact on our political, social, and cultural values. I've been inspired by these heroes who have changed our country and our world for the better.

Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869)

At 20, Gratz helped establish the Female Association for the Relief of Women and Children in Reduced Circumstances, aiding families after the American Revolution. She later cofounded the Philadelphia Orphan Asylum and the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society. Gratz created America’s first Jewish Sunday school, and her advocacy led to Philadelphia's first Jewish foster home. Many believe she inspired Sir Walter Scott, who learned of Gratz through family friend Washington Irving, to create Rebecca, the heroine in Ivanhoe. After her death, her brother Hyman founded Gratz College in her memory.
