Emma Thompson is on a mission. “I think there should be more action movies with older women as the hero,” says the 66-year-old actress, who steps into her first action role in her latest film, Dead Of Winter. She plays grief-stricken loner Barb who finds herself caught in a brutal blizzard in Minnesota, US, while trying to save a kidnap victim.

I just loved the idea of playing this unique character and being part of a thriller in Minnesota in winter. It was such a thrilling and interesting script with a surprising amount of humour in it, actually. It struck me as a totally bonkers thriller with humour and a really beautiful love story at the heart of it.
