What we wear speaks volumes about our celebrations, says Ellie Fennell
A century ago, Yuletide celebrations were nothing without satin gowns and formal furs. Now it's all signature sweaters and matching pyjamas, proof that style need not be stiff to be special - much like our celebrations where formal occasions with fancy canapés and copious guests are in decline. For many, get-togethers now revolve around a relaxed mix of friends and family, fizz on the sofa and a second helping of pudding in comfy loungewear. Just look how far we've come.
1950sPolished and prim postwar parties
After years of 'make do and mend', the 50s heralded an era of prosperity. Fashion followed with a focus on looking picture-perfect, and styles embraced an hourglass silhouette with a cinched waist and full petticoat. The casual look for chaps was epitomised by a sleeveless V-neck, smart trousers and tie.
1960sGo-go glamour, short skirts, sharp tailoring
The Swinging Sixties brought not only a cultural revolution but a drastic shift in fashion, with the emergence of mod fashion. Twiggy's signature style heavily influenced party wear, with miniskirts, go-go boots, A-line dresses, bold geometric patterns and metallic fabrics making for statement looks at Christmas. The 'Mad Men' vibe led the most stylish festive dressers to sleek suits, narrow lapels, skinny ties, a Harrington jacket and suede Chelsea boots.

Since when did babies need makeovers?
As I waited at the christening for the other guests to arrive, I peered into the crib. Oh my! I’d never seen such a beautiful baby. Those rosy cheeks, cherry-red, Cupid’s-bow pout, long lashes and flawless complexion… But wait. I took a closer look. Was that blusher on those newborn cheeks? And, no, surely not. Did I detect a lashing of mascara and smear of foundation on that tiny tot in a cot?
