1 ANCIENT RUINS

Inhabited for around 8,000 years, Malta is packed with history and fascinating sights that date back to the Neolithic era. If you have time to visit just one spot, make it the UNESCO-listed Hal Saflieni Hypogeum – a subterranean series of chambers that was built as an ancient burial site. You will need to book as far in advance as possible as tickets regularly sell out (heritagemalta.mt). Other must-sees include the Tarxien Temple ruins – older even than Stonehenge! Or the Mnajdra Temple, which sits dramatically on a clifftop.
