Protect yourself from the cold with our expert advice

WINTER-PROOF your body

Feeling run down? You're not alone. According to a study, 88% of Brits feel below par during the winter months. Thanks to plummeting temperatures, not only are you more likely to suffer from sniffles and sore throats, but the cold can also spell trouble for preexisting conditions like Raynaud's, asthma and stiff joints, while also causing problems like dry skin and chilblains. Discover our experts' winter survival tips to help you through the cold snap...

Relieve Raynaud's

Blood vessels in the extremities, especially fingers and toes, overreact to cold or stress by narrowing. This restricts blood flow, leading to affected areas changing colour from white to blue, then red, accompanied by numbness, pain and tingling.

SORT IT Wear thermal clothing and layer to keep warm and limit flareups, suggests GP Dr Donald Grant, senior clinical advisor at The Independent Pharmacy. 'Avoid sudden temperature changes, as this could cause tiny blood vessels to leak, leading to inflammation and pain.'

Quit smoking and limit alcohol, as these can tighten blood vessels, increasing your risk.

Ease asthma

Symptoms, including coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath, can be triggered by cold air, exercise and allergens.
