Love it or loathe it, when the FIFA World Cup comes around, there’s no avoiding all the football hype. And this year marks 60 years since England’s famous 1966 World Cup win, so the nation’s hopes, nerves and aspirations are bound to be bigger than ever. Already the flags will be out, the group chats will be buzzing and living rooms and pubs across the country are about to be taken over by people shouting at screens. For some, the World Cup is their idea of heaven, while for others it’s five weeks of being shushed on the sofa, losing control of the remote and wondering how on earth anyone can feel that strongly about 22 men chasing a ball around a field. But as one former football widow explains, even the most reluctant of us can get swept up in the excitement.
