What you'll need

• 15mm knitting needles

• 9 balls of chunky merino wool in 6 colours (you can also use 18-ply or super-bulky wool)

• Darning needle

BEFORE YOU START

Knit a gauge swatch to test your tension. Your 10cm x 10cm swatch should be 7 stitches wide and 9 rows high when knitted in stockinette stitch with 15mm needles.

MEASUREMENTS

Laying flat, your finished piece should measure about 120cm x 120cm.

PIECE 1

Using your 15mm knitting needles, cast on 30 stitches with colour 1. Your stitches will run down onto the plastic tube of your needles (if using circular needles) a little bit. That’s totally fine.

Make your first square in garter stitch. Garter stitch is made when we knit every stitch in every single row. Knit each row until your piece measures 40cm. This should be about 40 rows wide.

NOTE: Depending on the type of stitch you're making, you'll need to knit a slightly different number of rows. This is because each stitch type measures a bit differently. Garter stitch, for example, is tighter than stockinette, so you'll need to knit more rows to make up the 40cm.
