We break down the most common misconceptions still doing the rounds
-
The beauty world is full of advice shared on social media or repeated so often, it starts to sound like fact.
But many of these “rules” don’t hold up to science.
Myth
NATURAL INGREDIENTS ARE ALWAYS BETTER
THE TRUTH: “Natural” doesn’t automatically mean safer or more effective. Poison ivy is natural, so is poison oak. Natural ingredients can also trigger allergies and irritation, while many synthetic ingredients are highly tested, stable and effective.
REALITY CHECK: Judge ingredients by evidence, not origin.
Myth
OILY SKIN DOESN’T NEED MOISTURISER
THE TRUTH: Every skin type needs hydration. Oily skin produces excess sebum (oil), but that doesn’t mean it’s properly hydrated. In fact, stripping skin with harsh cleansers can trigger even more oil production. Choose lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers rather than skipping moisturiser altogether.
TRY: Dr. LeWinn’s Barrier
Myth
MORE CONTOUR EQUALS A MORE SCULPTED FACE
THE TRUTH: More product doesn’t equal more definition. Heavy contour can look muddy. Strategic placement and blending create a more natural, lifted effect.
TRY: Morphe Sudden Heat Creamy Bronzer Stick, $30, or L’Oréal Paris Face Sculptor, $29.99
