Karen Byrom finds culture and myths abound on Aphrodite's charming sunshine island

The Beauty Of Cyprus

Cyprus is known as the island of love, so it's fitting that I'm arriving here in Protaras for a family wedding. Aphrodite, goddess of love, would approve-you couldn't get a more stunning backdrop for your photos.

Aphrodite's presence is everywhere on the island legend has it that she emerged naked there, created from the foam of the sea, and if you swim around Aphrodite's Rock, near Paphos, you'll be blessed with eternal beauty.

An easy three-hour drive from Protaras, Paphos is the place to indulge your love of Greek and Roman myth and history. Wander the ruins of Kato Paphos Archaeological park to discover old villas, amazing mosaics and even a castle and lighthouse.

You'll also find the Tombs of the Kings at Paphos, a collection of 2,500-year-old burial sites now exposed to the curious eyes of history and archaeology buffs like me.

Nearer my base in Protaras, there's a far more modern take on humanity's ability to create lasting, beautiful art in the Sculpture Park at Ayia Napa, just a short bus ride away.

A free, open-air attraction, you can spend hours there admiring the sculptures created by artists around the world. Many evoke ancient legends of the area, others celebrate life, love and joy in the present day. Look out for minotaurs, the three-headed dog Cerberus, and the recreation of Jason's ship Argo.
