Cobh: Titanic's last port of call

Cobh: Titanic's last port of call

Is anyone there? Yes? Iceberg, right ahead!”. This haunting line is from the 1997 movie Titanic, an iconic love story between Rose, a wealthy high-society woman played by Kate Winslet, and Jack Dawson, a poor vagabond portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The film is set against the backdrop of the real-life ship RMS Titanic, which was hailed as ‘unsinkable’ before it struck an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912.

Regarded as one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history, the sinking of Titanic claimed 1,517 lives. Even today, its broken remains lie on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, whispering haunting tales of passengers who left behind their pasts, chasing the promise of a new beginning in America.

Starting its journey from Southampton, England, the Titanic made a stop at Cherbourg, France, before continuing toward its final destination. Around midday, the White Star Line’s pride, known for its opulent Grand Staircase, famously depicted in James Cameron's 1997 film, arrived at its last stop, Queenstown, a port near Cork, now known as Cobh.

imageWith hearts full of hope and dreams of a new beginning, 123 passengers boarded the ship, joining others already onboard, unaware of the fate that awaited them as they made their way to New York.

The Titanic disaster was not the only tragedy to have struck the picturesque Cobh. Known for its sunny weather, vibrant terrace houses, and historic admiralty buildings. As a city, it has witnessed countless tragedies and tests of resilience throughout history.

The town also served as the point of departure for millions of Irish emigrants escaping the Great Famine of 1846-1848.
