Can this new breed of turntables serve up a sound that gives them game, set and match?
-
Much like experienced surfers looking to ride a peachy wave for as long as possible, hi-fi manufacturers are finding new ways to make the most of the continuing vinyl revival and the obligingly buoyant market that goes with it.
That’s not only good news for them, it is also good news for the buyer, as more and more vinyl-related products become available. It’s a double-win for consumers, in fact, because not only is there more kit to choose from, there is also more variety.
Take the three turntables we look at in this roundup: the first makes use of wireless technology in a way that has only recently become available in record players; the second is from a brand-new name in hi-fi; and the third is from a revitalised turntable specialist looking to banish the old axiom that says premium sound quality means skimping on features.
A little more detail. Turntable number one is the JBL Spinner BT, a Bluetooth-equipped deck that, as well as operating in a conventional way can also work in tandem with wireless headphones or speakers – both of which JBL knows a thing or two about. Turntable two is the F110 from new company Rekkord Audio. We say new, but Rekkord was actually brought to life by the people behind the ProJect brand, and so brings ample vinyl-based expertise with it. Then there’s our third contender. Dual was big in the ’70s and early ’80s, when vinyl ruled the roost, but fell by the wayside when compact disc grabbed the limelight. Now it’s back with a new range and, with the CS 618Q, is attempting to lure buyers who prioritise both sound quality and a good feature set.
