IOS 26 SIMPLIFIES LOGINS WITH GMAIL, WHATSAPP CODE AUTOFILL

Apple revealed at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10, 2025, that iOS 26 introduces a feature allowing iPhone users to autofill one-time verification codes directly from third-party apps like Gmail and WhatsApp.

Previously limited to Apple's Mail and Messages apps, this update expands the autofill system to detect codes in popular email and messaging platforms, streamlining two-factor authentication for millions. The feature, now in developer beta, responds to user frustration with manually copying codes from non-Apple apps.

imageThe autofill works seamlessly. When a website or app prompts for a verification code, iOS 26 scans Gmail or WhatsApp for the incoming message, displaying the code above the keyboard for a single-tap entry. This eliminates the need to switch apps, copy the code, and paste it back, a process that could take several steps. X user Sankew06, who spotted the feature early, shared a screenshot showing a Gmail code autofilled during a login, highlighting its practicality.

imageThe system also supports automatic deletion of used codes, keeping inboxes tidy. Users can enable this in Settings under General, Autofill & Passwords, where a Delete After Use toggle clears codes from Gmail or WhatsApp after entry. This builds on a similar iOS 17 feature for Apple's apps, now extended to third-party platforms, making it a significant quality-of-life improvement for iPhone owners relying on diverse apps. Earlier iOS versions restricted code autofill to Apple's Mail and Messages, leaving users of third-party apps like Gmail, Outlook, or WhatsApp to handle codes manually. This was a pain point, especially for the 1.9 billion Gmail users and 3 billion WhatsApp users worldwide.

iOS 26 changes that by integrating with these platforms, recognizing codes in their respective apps without requiring users to funnel accounts through Apple's Mail.
