IOS 18.5 EXPANDS CARRIER SATELLITE SUPPORT TO IPHONE 13 MODELS
May 10, 2025
|Techlife News
Apple's upcoming iOS 18.5 update, set for release next week, will enable carrier-provided satellite connectivity, such as T-Mobile's Starlink service, on iPhone 13 models, including the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max, as reported this week by MacRumors.

The feature allows users to send text messages in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, enhancing connectivity for T-Mobile subscribers with compatible devices.
For iPhone users, carriers, and the tech industry, this expansion broadens access to satellite-based communication, previously limited to iPhone 14 and newer models, addressing connectivity challenges in remote regions.
T-Mobile's Starlink service, part of a beta program launched in December 2024, uses SpaceX's direct-to-cell satellites to provide texting capabilities, with plans for data and voice support in the future.
The iOS 18.5 update integrates this service seamlessly, requiring no additional apps and automatically connecting when users are out of terrestrial network range, displaying “T-Mobile SpaceX” and a satellite icon.
The update builds on Apple's existing satellite features, introduced with the iPhone 14 in 2022 via Globalstar, and reflects growing carrier adoption of satellite networks, including partnerships like Verizon with Skylo and AT&T with AST SpaceMobile.
SATELLITE CONNECTIVITY FOR IPHONE 13The iOS 18.5 update extends carrier satellite support to all iPhone 13 models, enabling T-Mobile subscribers with these devices to access Starlink’s texting service in areas lacking cellular coverage.
